Summer has drawn to a close, and you’re left with the holiday blues back at work. If you’re searching for autumn events in Hampshire, you’ll find everything from food experiences, music and tribute nights, countryside walks and immersive evenings such as murder mystery events, with plenty to enjoy at Oakley Hall Hotel and nearby. For couples, friendship groups, families and travellers planning a peaceful or eventful weekend away, an autumn break in the Hampshire countryside pairs seasonal dining and entertainment with hotel stays, local trails and easy itinerary ideas.
Here at Oakley Hall Hotel, we find the best way to combat this feeling is to find a countryside escape for a relaxing or activity-filled weekend. Autumn breaks are becoming more popular as we understand more about the importance of short breaks away from home and the positive impacts they have on our mental and physical health, especially when they offer time in nature, good food, social occasions and space to switch off from busy city life.
Why Autumn is one of the best times to visit Hampshire
Everyone has their favourite season, each one bringing its own unique characteristics. Autumn is when we see the changes from a hot and sometimes dry summer to cooler breezes, light rain and the changing colours of the scenery around us. Autumn is one of the best times to visit Hampshire, and what better reason to explore small villages, countryside estates and experience fine dining. This season tends to be one of the quietest; it allows you to truly immerse yourself in the county and not worry about big crowds and long queues, which for many is an exciting time of the year.
What most travellers look for in the Autumn months is prioritising somewhere that brings a cosy feeling, somewhere they can go to relax and take their mind off their hectic lives. At Oakley Hall Hotel, we try to create this relaxing and cosy space for you to fully unwind and enjoy your leisure stay to its full potential. We have changing seasonal menus, which bring in the flavours and produce of the season to fully immerse you. In a few of our dog-friendly bedrooms, you have a private space to sit outside your room with your four-legged friend. We encourage you to take a blanket out with you in the evenings and enjoy watching the midnight sky and bright stars, while you sip a hot drink of your choice.
Seasonal food experiences worth travelling for
For those who are travelling for a fine food experience, our Glasshouse restaurant is somewhere you will want to put on the list as a must-visit place to eat at. Our talented team of award-winning chefs have carefully designed menus to showcase the best of the season. Autumn brings back some hearty flavours and earthy produce. The majority of the vegetables used in our dishes come from our very own Kitchen Garden, carefully planted and cared for by our skilled gardener who knows exactly when to bring them into the Kitchen to be cooked and served to you.
While the autumn season can be warmer to begin with, the not-to-be-missed day of the week is Sunday. Our Sunday Roast menu was featured in What’s On Hampshire as one of the places to eat on a Sunday. Our dishes are designed to be shared and enjoyed by all, including your little ones. Here at Oakley Hall Hotel, we are starting to roll out themed nights in our restaurant, starting with steak nights this October. We are bringing you the best of Hampshire and Berkshire farmers, with fresh meat and vegetables from our garden, a carefully thought-out menu and wine pairings to completely immerse you in the experience and be conscientious about your carbon footprint.
Music, entertainment and social events across Hampshire (even for rainy days)
If you need to give yourself an excuse for a getaway this Autumn, Oakley Hall has an array of events on offer with residential packages. If Cluedo is your favourite board game or you love to watch a true crime documentary, our Murder Mystery immersive experiences are the perfect evenings for you. Live actors and a menu especially designed for the evening to completely immerse you in the experience.
For those country and swing music lovers, our Tribute Nights at Oakley Hall are the perfect opportunities for a weekend of singing, dancing and having a good time with your friends and family. Staying overnight alleviates the pressure of finding a taxi home.
Countryside walks, gardens and autumn colour trails
We know that Autumn comes around quickly after the warm summer months, the best thing about autumn though is all the changes. The crisp air during the day, the new vibrant colours that are seen new oranges, red and yellows. There are certain sounds and smells that remind us of the season like cinnamon and walking over the cracked and dry leaves, leaving a crunch as you pass over the pile. All of this can symbolise the start of new beginnings, as the clocks go back and you sleep in with the added hour in bed, you and your body can reset and refresh, get back into a steady routine again.
Here at Oakley Hall Hotel, we are a dog-friendly hotel, meaning you can bring your four-legged friend with you on your trips. Autumn walks in Hampshire can be picturesque and breathtaking; it can also include not breaking out in a hot sweat or having to worry about getting sunburnt. We recommend that you start off by taking a walk around our estate, get used to the grounds and the nature that will surround you while you stay with us. For stunning autumn views, Butser Hill is well worth a visit at 270 metres high. If you fancy exploring beyond the inland countryside towards the coast, Exbury Gardens showcases beautiful autumn displays in Hampshire. Then, if you’re feeling brave there is the Meon Valley Trail in the South Downs you can adventure together or the Basingstoke Canal Towpath which is 33 miles in length, but you can make it as long as you’d like it to be.
We know that the autumn season can bring in the cooler air and the rain too. Don’t worry about that though as there are many rainy-day activities you can join in as well. At Oakley Hall, we have a range of board games in our lounge that you are welcome to help yourselves to and play with. We invite you to come and try our delicious food at the Glasshouse restaurant, from a three-course meal to an Afternoon Tea or Sunday Roast.
For those looking for a relaxing retreat this autumn, our recent partnership with the local spa Wylder Wellbeing offers spa treatments to treat yourself to. Their beautiful facilities and different treatments are designed to help you relax and unwind.
